“Corkbark” Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia

I bought this tree in 2011 from Mission Hills Nursery in San
Diego. The species is native to northern China, Japan, and Korea.

Bare-rooted for another repotting a year later.
January 19, 2015:
Repotted as root-over-rock.
November 7, 2015:
The tree at the end of the growing season.
March 26, 2016:
The tree the following spring.
November 19, 2016:
Disaster! Apparently dead, most likely underwatered.
April 18, 2017:
Hope! New sprouts from the rootbase.
July 4, 2017:
More growth, but the original trunk isn’t coming back.
May 19, 2018:
A skimpy jungle of new growth.
May 19, 2018:
Removal of the original trunk.
May 19, 2018:
Separating one of the new trunks.
May 19, 2018:
Repotting the first new trunk.
May 19, 2018:
Separating the second trunk.
May 19, 2018:
Repotting the second trunk.
December 5, 2018:
First trunk established.

Second trunk established.
March 3, 2019:
Both trees reunited into a single pot.
March 3, 2019:
Pruned the tops and planted them as additional trees.
March 30, 2019:
A scraggy forest. I later separated the three small trees to grow on
their own.
February 23, 2020:
Repotting the two larger trees.
May 3, 2020:
Spring growth.
May 3, 2020:
Branch-pruned.
May 28, 2020:
More growth.
July 3, 2020:
