This tree has been in training since I bought it as a small sapling from Evergreen Gardenworks in 2021.

The tree today.

The tree upon arrival to my garden.

10 days after arrival the tree started developing fungal spots. I contacted Brent at Evergreen Gardenworks and he suggested they were likely because I was keeping it on the ground. His garden doesn’t have an issue with it. He recommended treating with a copper-based fungicide. I did, and the tree recovered. I keep it off the ground now.

New growth looking much better a month later.

Light branch-pruning after leaf-loss in winter.

Leafed-out a month later.

Good leaf growth in spring.

The tree started a second flush of growth in July.

The tree was overgrown so I decided to cut back the older growth and prune some branches.

After pruning.

I decided to try to propagate the branch cuttings.

Planted cuttings after their bases were treated with rooting hormone.

The mother tree and cuttings nearly a month later. Unfortunately, the cuttings died later that summer. I may not have been watering them enough.

The tree losing its leaves for winter.

Budding-out at the end of winter. Time for a repot!

Good root growth.

Root-pruned.

Bare-rooted and more root-pruning.

Wired in to a new training pot.

Repotted.

The tree after another year of growth.

Long, uninteresting trunk without taper.

Attempted air-layer.

The tree about a year ago.

Removed the air-layer. No roots had formed and the trunk appeared dead.

However, the base of the tree that survived was more interesting.

Another viewing angle. This is the current front.

Pruned branches before repotting.

Another attempt at propagation.

The pruned branches today. Fingers crossed.
