Chinese Quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis)

Most of the trees on beginBonsai.net started out as small starter trees or cuttings. I have grown the majority of them for 5 to 10 years or more before posting them on this website.

Recently I have started buying more expensive, developed trees to add to my collection. Today’s tree is one of those. I bought this chinese quince online from Cedar Rose Nursery in mid-January, 2024. It arrived on January 18.

The tree today.
January 18, 2024
The tree upon arrival. I tested it out with different pots and decided on this one.
January 18, 2024:
The tree is high in the pot but I decided to mound soil around the exposed roots.
The tree from the other side. The soil is equal parts akadama, scoria, and pumice. I decided to keep the lowest stump on the trunk as it is to see if it would shoot. It did. I’m still evaluating whether I want it in the final design or not.
January 18, 2024:
Planting completed.
February 2, 2024:
In the garden.
February 8, 2024:
Sprouting six days later. Exciting!
February 21, 2024:
More growth.
March 30, 2024:
Another month of spring growth.
March 30, 2024:
First pruning of the season.
May 1, 2024:
More growth, including from the lower stump on the main trunk.
May 1, 2024:
Second pruning of the season.
July 6, 2024:
Abundant growth in early summer.
July 6, 2024:
Third pruning of the season. I wasn’t sure what to do with the vertical trunk growing out of the lower stump. It is too straight for the rest of the design. I left it as a sacrifice branch to help close the old stump wound.
July 16, 2024:
I wired the trunk extending out of the stump but couldn’t get enough movement to match the rest of the tree.
September 15, 2024:
Continued bending the new trunk over the next 2 months, removing and replacing the wire to minimize scarring.

February 3, 2025:
Winter leaf-loss shows the new trunk doesn’t match the rest of the tree.

February 3, 2025:
The tree from the opposite side with some of the branch-tips pruned. I was still unsure about the wired trunk extension, or which side should be the front.
March 7, 2025:
Sprouting out for spring.
April 3, 2025:
Removed the old lower stump to make it flush with the main trunk. The newer trunk has lower growth that could be cut back to.
June 7, 2025:
Spring growth.
June 7, 2025:
Branch-pruned.
June 7, 2025:
I was still thinking about how to handle the new trunk running up through the middle of the tree.
July 13, 2025:
The tree last week.
July 13, 2025:
The tree with about half of the new trunk removed.
July 16, 2025:
The tree with more of the new trunk removed, down to the lowest leaves. I may remove it entirely.
July 17, 2025:
The tree today, from what I currently consider to be the back.
